It is time to think about getting a flu shot. The flu can make existing health conditions worse and is especially dangerous for people with chronic health conditions, like heart disease and diabetes, which often effect older adults. Older adults with these conditions are more likely to develop complications from the flu that can result in hospitalization and even death. During recent flu seasons, between 80% and 90% of flu related deaths have occurred in people 65 and older.
Why get it now? The flu season in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get the seasonal flu and spread it to others. If you are a caregiver of an older adult this is especially important.
