Who We Are

Our Vision:
Agency on Aging Area 4 envisions an ageist- and ableist-free society.
Our Mission:
Our mission is to enrich the lives of older adults and people with disabilities by fostering networks of support, advocating for individual choice, collaborating with others, ensuring equity, and striving to do so with conviction.

Agency on Aging Area 4 (AAA4) serves aging adults (60+), adults with disabilities, and the people who care for them in seven counties: Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba. AAA4 oversees in-house programs as well as contracts with about 30 different organizations to provide services for older adults and caregivers in the seven-county region.

About Agency on Aging Area 4:
Our agency was established in 1973, making us one of the six original agencies on aging in California. Ten years later, in 1983, the agency was restructured as a non-profit Joint Powers Authority (JPA), which makes us different than many other AAAs in that we are a stand-alone joint powers authority with non-profit status. The agency’s joint powers status ties it directly to the county supervisors, adding strength and credibility and assuring accountability.

We are one of 33 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) in California. Area 4 refers to Planning and Service Area (PSA) 4, which includes seven counties in Northern California: Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba. While eleven other AAAs in the state have multi-county service areas, none contain as many counties as AAA4.

About Agencies on Aging:
Our agency and all 618 Area Agencies on Aging in the United States exist today because of the passage of the Older Americans Act (OAA) which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965. The OAA created a national network of area agencies to better respond to the needs of Americans 60 and older in every local community. They were created to address the needs of older adults at the regional and local level through services and supports (like home-delivered meals and case management) to support independent living. Agencies like ours make it possible for older adults to “age in place” in their home and communities by providing a range of options to older adults that suit them best.
